Kuih Malay Eatery

BRANDING, PRINT PRODUCTION, & ILLUSTRATION

This one’s for all the foodies out there like myself! Kuih Malay Eatery is a quaint, traditional Malay eatery local to Jacksonville Beach, FL that encourages people to get out of their comfort zone and try new cultural foods. Kuih are small bite-sized desserts, usually steamed, loaded with lots of flavors and deliciousness! (sorry in advance for all of the exclamation points, food just makes me happy - anyway, let’s continue)

This project is special to me because it was inspired by my cultural background. My mother is an amazing cook and baker from Malaysia, so I grew up eating lots of kuih and traditional Malay food. I absolutely love the Malay culture and cuisine, so I wanted to celebrate it through this personal project.

BEHIND THE DESIGN

Throughout this personal project, I used different kinds of kuih as my main source of inspiration for the designs. Pandan, coconut, and gula melaka (palm sugar) are a few common ingredients, which led to the appetizing, makes-you-want-to-eat-it color palette. Because of the gooey and squishy texture of the bite-sized desserts, I chose to bring in some fun, hand-rendered illustrations and typography into the visual identity to maintain a modern feel, while still celebrating the roots of the culture!

Here are some delicious kuih up close!
